Others prefer to separate the two syllable types into Vowel teams - where the first long sound is heard though there are two vowels next to each other. The importance of identifying short vowels is a foundational skill needed to read and write. Students who struggle to identify the correct short vowel sounds are unable to read fluently, which negatively impacts comprehension. It is important to use multisensory strategies and techniques to develop to automatic, short vowel sounds.
